Here in Denver, rock climbing is a way of life. It comes with specific gear and special lingo that can make it seem inaccessible to beginners. But never fear! If you’ve always wanted to climb but haven’t gotten around to it, there’s no better place to give it a try. To get a sense of what you’re looking for from your climbing experience, check out some of the most well-known climbing magazine websites, Rock and Ice and Climbing. You probably don’t need to buy a bunch of equipment just yet, but you could also go and chat with the employees in the climbing section of a nearby outdoors store. They’ll have plenty of insider info on where to get started.
When you’re ready to get moving, there are several indoor climbing gyms in Denver to help you learn to climb like a pro. If you’re ready to get straight outside, many local companies offer that option too. We’ve rounded up some of the best places to check out for beginner instruction.
ROCK’n & JAM’n
If you’re looking for an indoor climbing experience, ROCK’n & JAM’n is a well-established climbing gym with two Denver locations. They offer a two-hour introductory class for beginners that comes with a free seven-day membership and free gear rental. They promise to personalize your private lesson to your needs, so if you’ve been wanting to learn to climb but are afraid to start, they’ll work with you to manage your worries. The gym also offers yoga and fitness classes, if you’re looking for a well-rounded routine in one spot.
Ubergrippen Indoor Climbing Crag
Even closer to TAVA Waters, Ubergrippen Indoor Climbing Crag is just a short drive away. They have a variety of lesson options, whether you’re brand new to climbing, or it’s been long enough that you need a refresher course. Their introduction to climbing class, or “The Crag Experience,” teaches you all the basics of climbing, from lingo and gear to beginning movement. It also comes with a 14-day trial membership afterward, so you can put your new skills to use right away.
Denver Bouldering Club
If you want to learn to climb indoors without the harness and gear, Denver Bouldering Club is the place for you. When bouldering, you don’t usually go as high as you do when climbing with a harness, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy! You’ll challenge different muscles in this style of climbing, and you’ll probably know pretty quickly if you prefer climbing with or without a rope. This club offers beginner instruction as well as options for improving your skills when you’re ready.
Denver Climbing Company
Denver also has plenty of options for learning to rock climb outdoors. Denver Climbing Company offers group and private instruction on North Table Mountain, just a 15 minute drive from Denver. On summer weekends, they even provide a shuttle from Denver Union Station. Outings are 4 hours long, and the instructors provide all the gear you’ll need, including shoes and a helmet. This lesson also comes with fantastic views, and you’ll learn the ins and outs of climbing outdoors – including all about safety – as you go.
Whatever kind of climbing you’re imagining, Denver has plenty of options for getting started. For ideas for more local adventures, check out our blog.
