Our very own backyard is filled with ways to indulge in your wanderlust – from sacred Middle Eastern artifacts to exquisite African textiles. Skip the plane ticket or long car ride and take your summer vacation at one of these awesome Denver-area museums.
1) Denver Art Museum
Did you know we have one of the largest art museums between the West Coast and Chicago in our own hometown? The Denver Art Museum is amazing and we think every local should visit here at least once. Boasting more than 70,000 diverse works, you’ll lay eyes on art that has touched multiple centuries and countries – think of it like your all-access trip around the world without the spendy plane ticket. Through September 16th of this year, you can see the current exhibit which includes over 100 contemporary landscape photographs with a unique twist. Pro tip: Every first Saturday of the month general admission into the museum is free!
2) Colorado Sports Hall of Fame
Huddle up, sports fans! Immerse yourself into Colorado’s history of sports by heading over to the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame. You can find this unique museum at Gate #1 on the west side of Sports Authority Field at Mile High. Inside you will find individuals ranging from baseball stars all the way to equestrian legends, that have changed the game in their given sport and have been given a public acknowledgment for their dedication. You’ll see exhibits like The Sportswomen of Colorado, The Denver Broncos Franchise, and the Gallery of Legends. During their summer hours, you can sign up for 75 to 90-minute professionally guided tours on Monday through Saturday, 10 AM to 2 PM. Score!
3) Denver Museum of Nature and Science
Nature is cool. If you live in Colorado, you know that. So why not visit the Denver Museum of Nature and Science to learn all about the natural history of Colorado, Earth and the universe? Getting your steps in for the day will be no problem, this museum boasts 716,000 square feet of over one million objects including natural history and anthropological materials. Right now a special exhibit of the Dead Sea Scrolls is open. It’s a very popular exhibit, so make sure to get your tickets beforehand online and enjoy broadening your knowledge the fun way!
