After you’ve unpacked the boxes in your new apartment, what’s the most important step to making your new space feel like home? Decorating the walls! Well-placed art and wall decor can go a long way in helping you settle in and personalize your space. If you’ve avoided decorating because you’re worried about leaving holes in the walls of your rental, it’s time to re-think and get creative. Here are some of the best ways to take your walls from blank to bedecked without pulling out the hammer and nails.
Command Hooks and Strips
These cheap and easily available adhesive-backed hangers are a renter’s dream. Command strips are ideal for mounting artwork – including framed pieces – and flat objects. They come in a variety of sizes and can hold a surprising amount of weight. Most importantly, when removed, they don’t leave any residue to clean up (say goodbye to your double-sided tape). Command hooks work like the strips but are ideal for hanging objects that wouldn’t come in a frame – try them for a string of sparkly lights in your bedroom or get the waterproof version for hanging up towels in the bathroom.
For items that you need to take off the wall more frequently, try Velcro (hook and loop) strips. Similar to command strips, these work great for framed items and other flat objects, like a dry erase board, a light mirror, or even window coverings, if you don’t want to deal with a curtain rod.
If you haven’t already loaded up on washi tape for your craft projects, get ready to fall in love with this Japanese tape made from natural fibers. It comes in as many colors and patterns as you can dream up and is ideal for taping photos or paper to the wall. You can even make a DIY washi frame for your photos for an extra special accent. Because washi tape is similar to a low-tack masking tape, you won’t have to worry about pulling paint off when you take your decorations down.
Decals and Removable Wallpaper
When you want to make more of a statement with one of your walls, decals and removable wallpaper are a fun way to go. These peel-and-stick options come in solid colors or patterns, and some are even even customizable with your own images. Best of all, these decorations are designed to peel off the wall easily when you’re ready for a change.
Decorating your walls is one of the best ways to make your apartment feel like the home you’ve been dreaming of. Renting doesn’t mean that you can’t get in on the fun!
