With the holidays behind us, it’s time to get moving! Whether you’re a race veteran or you’re resolving to make big changes this year, Denver has plenty of winter races to get you back outside in the winter air you love. Newbies can experience their first 5K, couples can race side by side, and cyclists can challenge themselves with a winter duathlon. Read on for some of our favorite local races to check out!
Polar Bear 5K in Washington Park
On Sunday, January 21, runners will gather in Washington Park for the Polar Bear 5K in the brisk winter weather. Let the cold motivate you to beat your best time, and plan to hang out afterwards for post-event refreshments and photos with the race mascot, Polie the polar bear. All participants will also receive a free polar bear knit beanie and a custom finisher’s medal. For families, there’s also a free kid’s fun run to get those little legs moving.
Le Cours d’Amour 5K/10K in City Park
The perfect race for couples, whether you want to run hand in hand or race each other to the finish! If you’re not romantically entangled, you can still enjoy The Course of Love, where every participant gets a free rose. Looping around Ferril Lake, this race course takes runners across City Park on Saturday, February 10. When you’re finished, you can head to one of the nearby local eateries for a brunch date, or make a day of it and explore the Denver Zoo or Museum of Science and Nature.
Chilly Cheeks Duathlon Series in Cherry Creek State Park
If you run and ride, the Chilly Cheeks Duathlon is the race for you. A four-mile run and 10-mile bike ride through nearby Cherry Creek State Park, this duathlon is perfect if you love to work up a sweat outside—come rain or sun or snow. If you’re new to running and cycling back to back, you can start training for the February 24 race day. If you’ve been training all winter, you still have time to register for the upcoming January 13 race.
Fight for Air Climb in Republic Plaza
If you’re looking for something a little different in your race repertoire or just love to move for a good cause, check out the Fight for Air Climb. In this event, participants will climb 1,098 stairs up 56 floors of a downtown skyscraper to help raise funds for the American Lung Association. If you need even more of a challenge, you can register for The Ultimate Climb and ascend the building as many times as you can in one hour!
